Empire Valley Ranch

John and Joyce Holmes have literally been on the ranch all their lives: John was a cowboy as a teenager and Joyce grew up on the ranch they now live on. Joyce initially wanted to be a veterinarian but realized she missed the ranch too much to continue her degree! Together, they bring decades of ranching experience and honest, humane animal welfare principles to provide healthy choices for British Columbian families.

An idyllic life

The Holmes’ ranch is over 30,000 acres of hayfields, open grassland and mountain terrain. Cattle graze on the open range for 10 months of the year and for the 2 months they need to be sheltered, they eat hay from their own fields. The Holmes handle their cattle from horseback only, never mechanized vehicles, which prevents stress. The remoteness of the ranch means that the cattle aren’t exposed to water or air pollution, and they are also raised without chemicals, GMO feed and hormones.

Dedicated stewards

John and Joyce are stewards of the land and operate a sustainable, grass-based ranching operation. Their careful feeding and grazing schemes rehabilitate poor soil or over-grazed areas. A water truck also helps reduce impact on the land by allowing cattle access to areas which they normally wouldn’t graze due to the distance from a natural water source. The Holmes dedicate their lives to healthy, sustainable grasslands, cattle and premium beef.
